What crisis? Sony Music buys EMI's back catalogue for $2.2 billion
While its parent company goes through a dramatic reinvention, Sony Music's scraped together $2.2 billion to lead a consortium that's just bought EMI's music publishing business. While it'll sell off the three Virgin and Famous Music labels to avoid competition concerns, the company will gain access to three million songs from artists like Frank Sinatra, Jay-Z and Adele. It won't affect the day-to-day running of EMI's record label, which is a separate entity, but it will make Sony the biggest music publisher in the world. It's hard not to envisage a future in which the company's influence in the way we buy and listen to music becomes even greater -- especially given that EMI led the charge in abandoning DRM all those years ago.

Indonesia earthquake: Why no tsunami this time?
Wednesday's Indonesia earthquake was similar in magnitude to the devastating 2004 quake, but there was no tsunami. The difference? Location.?
A powerful earthquake and aftershock struck the Indian Ocean off of northern Indonesia Wednesday, triggering tsunami watches and evacuations throughout the Indian Ocean basin, from Australia to Kenya.
Skip to next paragraphThe first temblor, a magnitude 8.6 quake, struck at 2:38 p.m. local time, along a segment of a fault on the sea floor some 269 miles southwest of the coastal city of Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh province. A second, 8.2 magnitude quake struck two hours later roughly 120 miles south of the first quake's epicenter.?
Both quakes occurred at relatively shallow depths ? 14 miles and 10 miles ? beneath the sea floor, according to data gathered by the US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden, Colo.
So far, the quakes appear to have done little damage and caused no fatalities, although people felt the shaking as far away as the east coast of India. In Banda Aceh, many residents streamed into the streets when the shaking began, according to press reports from the city.
Memories of the disastrous December 2004 earthquake and tsunami remain fresh. The event left 230,000 dead throughout the Indian Ocean basin as?the tsunami in some locations reached heights of up to 90 feet.
Though both of Wednesday's large quakes join the magnitude 9.1 event in 2004 event as ?great? earthquakes ? the strongest of six categories ? the?initial temblor Wednesday reportedly pushed only a 30-inch-high surge of water onto Indonesia's west coast.
In addition, the 2004 event released nearly six times as much energy as the first quake that struck on Wednesday and some 22 times more energy than the second.
The difference? Location, suggests Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist with the National Earthquake Information Center.
The 2004 rupture occurred along the northern reaches of a subduction zone that hugs the west coast of Indonesia and defines the arc of Indonesia's islands.
The quake occurred in a section of the zone where a vast patch of crust known as the Indian plate is sliding beneath the much smaller Burma plate. Quakes along such subduction zones tend to generate the planet's most violent temblors because the surface areas sliding past each other are large.?
Researchers estimate that the patch of the subduction zone affected in the 2004 quake covered an area roughly the size of California. The amount of slip along the length of this patch was 50 feet.
Along the deep-sea trench that marks the subduction zone, the quake lifted the overlying crust several yards. The sudden upward shove along the length of the rupture zone generated the enormous tsunamis the region experienced.
Today's quakes occurred farther offshore and on a different type of fault, Ms. Vaughan explains.
The faults involved Wednesday are so-called strike-slip faults that sit squarely on the Australian plate, another of the plates forming the subduction zone off Indonesia. Strike-slip faults tend to be vertical cracks in the crust. This means that the plates usually slide by each other without radically altering the height of the sea floor.
By contrast, the thrust faults along a subduction zone run diagonally downward from the sea floor as one plate slips under the other. This increases the possibility of disturbing the height of the sea floor. It also means the area of the surfaces sliding past each other is much greater than during a strike-slip rupture.
?We've had a series of these occur since 2004,? Vaughan says, referring to undersea quakes on the Australian plate. The most recent occurred in January ? a magnitude 7.2 quake whose epicenter was only about 13 miles from that of the 8.6 quake on Wednesday.
The faults involved in Wednesday's quakes are oriented in the same direction as the general direction of travel the Australian plate itself is following, suggesting that the ruptures are tied to the plate's movement, although to some degree the event also may represent the crust's continued adjustment to the major change the 2004 event brought to the region, Vaughan says.

Windows Phone exec exits five months after being poached from Samsung
Microsoft's Gavin Kim was a high-profile capture for Redmond, as it poached the former Samsung and Motorola exec to bolster its Windows Phone marketing team. Now, just five months into the job, he's departing after marshaling the "Smoked by Windows Phone" campaign into the world. The company wouldn't go into specifics beyond saying that it was a personal decision to leave and Microsoft bears him no ill will -- but then that's what they always say. He'll be replaced by Eugene Ho, who now has the job of continuing the burgeoning platform's upward trajectory and winning around those European carriers who've greeted it with little more than apathy.

Paul Spector, M.D.: Normal Medical Lab Results Not So Normal
These days, the typical annual check-up is inevitably preceded by "blood work." The technician assembles what appears to be enough tubes to drain your tank. (After seeing the little tubes used for babies and young children, I've wondered why adults can't do the same.) You watch the deep crimson liquid flow into the test tubes and hope it harbors no surprises, that everything will be analyzed and found "normal."
In our medical system, health is defined in the negative, the absence of abnormal findings. Medical language reflects this in the curious nomenclature of test results. A "negative" test result means you're not sick, a positive thing. The medical field continues to define health as the absence of disease, an impoverished conceptualization that underlies the most fundamental problems in our health care (it should be called sick care) system.
Over the past 20 years, the history-taking (a time when physicians sat with patients and got to know them, who they lived with, the work they did, the family story, the struggles, their habits, their vices and values, in other words got to know what was "normal" for them) and physical exams have been eclipsed by sophisticated blood tests and imaging techniques. This is a casualty of dramatic advances in science and technology as well as financial pressures that encourage abbreviated visits and greater patient volume.
So you might have a quick chat before undressing for a rapid physical exam. When you rejoin your doctor at her desk, she takes a moment and pages through your chart. She scans the lab results checking the abnormal column. If it's clear, you're good to go. "See you next year. You're fine."
But where do these normal ranges come from? A reasonable person might presume normal ranges are defined by the test results of people whose health has been carefully scrutinized and found to be optimal.
Wrong.
Normal lab numbers are determined by huge reference laboratories. Let's take blood glucose as an example. All the glucose test results from the past few months are pooled. The middle 95 percent is defined as "normal." If you fall in the 2.5 percent above or below that range, you have an abnormal blood glucose. In other words, the medical use of the term "normal," which is understood to mean healthy, is really a statistical concept.
There is an attempt at refining the normal ranges by using information about age, gender, and location. So a 70-year-old male in Flagstaff, Ariz. will be compared to more men around that age than anything else. But no diagnostic history is available to the reference labs. Test results from venues that are thought to have mostly "healthy" people, such as health fairs, are also used. But isn't someone more likely to get blood drawn at a health fair if they think there might be a problem?
So let's take a look at how this plays out. Your annual blood glucose creeps up each year, but remains in the normal range for a decade. Year 11, your doctor says, "Bill, I'm afraid you've got a sugar problem." Bill thinks, "Wow, and last year I was fine."
Bill was not fine.
So there are three fundamental problems. One, we are compared to a population, many of whom are not healthy. Two, 99 percent of physicians do not follow trends in your lab values in order to catch a problem before it's progressed to a point where it compromises your health. And three, most physicians no longer "know" their patients.
Mant of the most common illnesses of our culture are chronic, such as diabetes, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, and obesity. The kind of medicine I've described above is partly to blame. You don't wake up one day with a chronic disease that you didn't have the day before. Nobody became obese or diabetic or hypertensive on Tuesday. Until preventive medicine replaces the acute care model, it won't get better.
What You Can Do:
1. You are the most important member of your health care team.
Own a copy of your test results. The system is broken and you can not assume essential data will be available to the doctors making decisions about your care. It is your job to make yourself "known" to your doctor. You must inform her of what "normal" (as defined above in history-taking) life is for you.
2. You provide your own normal lab reference range. Get a baseline set of blood work when you're well in order to keep track of your results over time.
Address trends early and do not wait until results have hit the abnormal range.
3. Take all medical statements about your health with a dose of skepticism. The doctors can provide information about large populations. That is not the same as knowing what is necessarily in store for you.
Do your homework. Read about your condition. Get second opinions.

Leaked benchmarks suggest Motorola is working on a Snapdragon S4 phone
You slave away on your company's Next Big Thing, of course you want to see how it performs. And we're glad that you do decided to dabble, hypothetical engineer, because we can pore over those numbers for a glimpse at what's coming next. According to benchmarks discovered by Blog of Mobile, Motorola might be looking to move on from the Texas Instrument chipsets it's used in the past. In the purported system details included with the benchmark results, the Ice Cream Sandwich-decked phone houses a 1.5GHz MSM8960 chip -- that's Qualcomm's Snapdragon S4. Could these be more details on a possible RAZR HD -- even an Atrix 3? Unfortunately, more concrete information remains scant. The repeated mention of Qinara, however, tallies with Motorola's XT928, China Telecom's version of the Motorola RAZR released last year, codenamed Dinara. (So, would that be Q for Qualcomm?) If, according to the leak, the device does use a 720p display alongside the aforementioned dual-core processor, it would find itself up against HTC's One X, which packs the same Snapdragon S4 hardware in its AT&T guise. Hopefully, Motorola is making some similarly lofty efforts with its hardware design to ensure we've got yet another phone to get excited about.

ruthesqueda7: Family Tree Maker 2012 running on a Virtual ...
By Mark Rabideau on April 7th, 2012 | 44 reads | Print This Post
Like many of you, I rely heavily on Ancestry.com to provide me access to genealogical source materials.? The difficulty I have had with these materials over the years is in simultaneously getting source media objects/images onto my desktop and linked to a viable copy of a family tree.? Well, it looks like Family Tree Maker 2012 (FTM 2012) finally has solved that problem for me.
Given that most of the ManyRoads readership are Windows users, the following section may have only limited value to you.? However if you are a Linux or Mac user or if you are contemplating transitioning operating systems environments (or mixing them), I think you might find my journey of value.
I think most of you know, by now, that I am primarily a Linux user.? Currently my business and personal PCs are running Ubuntu variants for our general computing and technical development needs, most generally Xubuntu 12.04. As a rule, I do not buy Windows software.? My typical experience has been that I can easily find Open Source software with the same or better functionality than that available on either Windows or Apple at a much lower cost (read, Free).? However, when I read that FTM 2012 was able to synch with Ancestry.com and synch across my PC and tablet platforms; well, I just had to give FTM a try.
My initial attempt at installation involved using Wine (Windows Emulator Environment).? To quote the folks at Wine:
Wine lets you run Windows software on other operating systems. With Wine, you can install and run these applications just like you would in Windows.
Wine is still under active development. Not every program works yet, however there are already several million people using Wine to run their software.
Sadly, FTM 2012 failed to run for me after installation under Wine. Because I had yet another installation option available to me, I did not bother to figure out why Wine did not work (sorry).
My next attempt involved installing FTM 2012 on my Windows XP Virtual machine running under Xubuntu (My virtual WinXP PC is installed in an environment using Oracle Virtualbox OSE.). For those who are unfamilar with VirtualBox, here?s what they say about themselves:
VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. Not only is VirtualBox an extremely feature rich, high performance product for enterprise customers, it is also the only professional solution that is freely available as Open Source Software under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.
Now back to my tale, this second installation went very well. Although I did decide to make a few modifications to my WinXP Virtual environment for a better operating experience as well as an improved look & feel, specifically:
- I modified my standard WinXP desktop settings to use Clear Type (prettier fonts)
- I upped my Virtual PC memory from 256 to 768 MB, to speed things up because FTM seems a tad memory heavy to me (in terms of ?apparent? response time)
- I added additional disk space to allow for smoother operation (another little improvement to response time was noted)
Because one of the major reasons I spent money on FTM was the synch between my Desktop and Ancestry? I began with a link to my Ancestry account. Here are my basic, ?initial? observations:
- FTM 2012 synchs quite well with pre-existing Ancestry data.? Not fast but thoroughly!
- Media does indeed download!? Yay!
- Finally, to my joy and surprise, I have an easy method to correct errors on my Ancestry Trees.
Other nice features/ options I have noticed thus far include:
- You can exclude Ancestry family Trees from automatic searches (the little leaf thingees)!? Those error-prone, inaccurate Family Trees can now be easily ignored. As they say in Germany: Gott sei dank! (Praise to God!)
- FTM allows ?enhance record images? to be downloaded from Ancestry.com; so much better to see them with?
- It is easy to define a specific location for your FTM files, data, images, etc.; this allows me to place everything in a shared Linux/Windows file area.
In the main, this seems to have been money well spent!? As I learn more about FTM 2012, I will post noteworthy items on ManyRoads.

. Just before paying money to invest on a new communications system, you may try to make the most of your business? current phone assets. This is beneficial in identifying your current communications requirements in the office.
. One of the most important tips that you shouldn?t forget is considering the features of the phone system. Verify that the system may effectively and efficiently take care of conference calls. The Millions : A Room of Everyone's Own: The Writer as Public Fixture
The portmanteau ?coffice,? which sounds at first like a cute one-liner, turns out to be so useful for describing contemporary reality that it may, like ?staycation,? soon appear in dictionaries. Originating in South Korea in 2010, it refers to a coffee shop employed as one?s office. It?s also a verb: to coffice. Bootstrapping entrepreneurs throw the term around, and though I haven?t heard writers use it yet, I suspect they will soon. Every time I stop into a caf? in New York City, I see them, ears tethered to computers, faces aglow with laptop light. When I speak of ?writers,? of course, I am not discussing crafters of emails or grocery lists. I am thinking of aspiring novelists, creative non-fiction writers, and poets too. ?There they are,? I think. ?The cofficeurs.? And what I have always been tempted to say to them is: Go home.
Writing in public feels like a performance, but, when we?re dealing with literature, the performance is not what endures. To put it another way: the final outcome is the performance. I can?t help but assume when I see the coffice-bound writer as one who privileges persona over results.
However, when I asked writers I know about their own relationship with public writing (after all, some of my best friends write in coffee shops), I was surprised by the range of answers. One explained to me, on a crowded subway train, that the temptation of Internet pornography was so strong that a public environment helped him avoid autoeroticism, and kept him focused and productive. This did little to assuage my aversion, but I was interested to hear that internal distraction can be just as much an obstacle to writing as external distraction.
Another writer pointed to the brute economic necessity of the coffice. This is a salaried reporter with benefits, required to travel locally, who makes a living posting short compact creative news pieces to a blog with as many as fifteen deadlines a week. Wherever he can grab a moment to write, he does. ?Sometimes I need to leave my apartment to get work done, to just change the space.? I pointed out that very few writers are writing a novel because rent is due. His response: ?Novelists are exactly the same as reporters. Just take away reality, the galaxy of issues that go along with dealing with actual people and their lives, and deadlines.? Ultimately, he said, ?If you?re saying that NYC supports a large number of creative types who end up working in public, yes, you?re correct. Should they shut up (their laptops) and get a job in a cooperative office space, maybe. Me, I?m thrilled Variety [Cafe] has free WiFi.?
A third more casual writer ? my partner ? suggested that cofficing may be less a decision about process than a conditioned behavior, the byproduct of college culture. Many educated individuals were brought up in dorms, libraries, large classrooms, campus lawns, study halls, dining halls, and community lounges. To think and create in public has become a norm. Indeed, the implied presence of an immense public when working on a computer with Internet access is almost inescapable. Yet this only seems to sustain my view that writing in public is, like many other habits of college students and Internet users, an attention-seeking performance.
Is that so wrong? Coffee-house culture was vital to European literature of the last century, Ernest Hemingway , perhaps the patron saint of cofficers, not only wrote in public, but wrote about how he wrote in public (maybe even as he was writing in public). Hemingway was a great talent, but also a showoff who required validation, and in his youth liked to execute his art before an audience between shots of ?rum St. James? and eyeing a pretty girl ?with a face fresh as a newly minted coin,? as he writes in the first chapter of A Moveable Feast (a text that no doubt helped fuel the trend of Americans writing in caf?s).
But writing in seclusion was the true ritual throughout even Hemingway?s life. In his 1954 Nobel Prize Banquet Speech, Hemingway said, ?Writing, at its best, is a lonely life? For [a writer] does his work alone and if he is a good enough writer he must face eternity, or the lack of it, each day.? Virginia Woolf, who also knew from solitude, even went as far as to write that a marginalized individual could only contribute quality literature to the world by first having A Room of One?s Own.
These days, many of our most prominent writers seem to have gotten the memo. With the exception of Nathan Englander, who I?m told is a regular at the Hungarian Pastry Shop in Morningside Heights, there seem to be surprisingly few published writers operating in coffee shops. In my casual research I came across How I Write: The Secret Lives of Authors edited by Dan Crowe, wherein famous living writers were asked to comment about their own process. Among the sixty-seven or so contributors, only two writers allude to writing in cafes or coffee shops. Nicholson Baker describes his earplugs as useful ?in any loud place,? but does not reference a particular public location. Elif Shafak explains, ?I am a nomad? libraries, cafes, streets, trains stations? everywhere can be my writing abode,? but like she said, she?s a nomad. Willy Vlautin writes at a racetrack. From A.M. Homes to ZZ Packer the other 64 prefer solitude from their pre-published days to the present, sometimes referencing objects they keep on their desks or pictures hung on a wall in a private room as things that serve their process.
As these writers know ? as Hemingway and Woolf knew ? literature is a relationship both with solitude and with the rest of the world, and I suppose what bothers me about the laptop hive of the ?coffice? is that it offers neither. So when I see writers hunched over their third refills, maybe I don?t want to say, ?go home,? but ?stay.? Close your laptop, observe humanity, have a lengthy conversation with a fellow customer or artist, then go home and get the work done.
