Sixteen-year-old Shouryya Ray, a student from Dresden who was born in Calcutta, submitted a paper proposing analytical solutions to two problems in particle dynamics.

A research paper that claims to fill in a gap in Isaac Newton's formulas for the physics of falling objects has drawn worldwide attention to a 16-year-old student in Germany, but physicists are reserving judgment until they've seen the proof.

The focus of the buzz is Shouryya Ray, an Indian-born student who won second prize this month in the math and informatics category for Germany's Jugend Forscht student science competition. Ray tackled a couple of longstanding puzzlers for physics students: How do you account for air resistance in calculating the trajectory of ball thrown out at an angle? And precisely how does a ball thrown against the wall rebound?

The first question relates to Newton's law of universal gravitation: In his Principia Mathematica, published in 1687, Newton laid out how a gravitational field would affect a thrown object ??but he didn't account for the effect of air resistance. Through the centuries, physicists have used numerical approximations to take drag into account, and when computers come into play, those approximations can be incredibly precise. But Ray said he wanted to come up with a set of formulas that could calculate the effect directly, even though his instructors said that had never been done.

"I asked myself: Why can't it work?" he told the German newspaper Die Welt.

That's what Ray tried to do in his prize-winning paper, titled "Analytical?Solution of Two?Fundamental?Unsolved?Problems of?Particle Dynamics" ("Analytische L?sung von zwei ungel?sten fundamentalen Partikeldynamikproblemen"). In addition to the falling-ball problem, Ray took on a puzzler of more recent vintage, having to do with the description of a particle's collision with a wall, as described by 19th-century theory. But it was the "kid-trumps-Newton" angle that really stirred up a buzz.

The idea that a teenager could figure out something that Newton didn't is irresistible ? particularly when the teen is an immigrant from Calcutta who says he's no genius. But the story just sparked more questions among inquiring minds in such online hangouts as?Physics Forum,?Slashdot?and Reddit: What exactly did Ray do? And were these problems really such mysteries to solve?

That's a challenge, because Ray's paper was a school project submitted for a contest, and thus not subject to the publication process and peer review that professional work typically goes through. For that reason, the experts are reluctant to weigh in.

"This story seems rather suspicious," Richard Fitzpatrick, a physicist at the University of Texas in Austin, told me in an email. "None of the news reports give any details of the calculation. None of the people who hailed Shouryya Ray as a genius are scientists, and none of?them give the impression that they have seen the calculation in question. It is impossible to gauge the scientific merit of the calculation until it is made public."

Syracuse University physicist Simon Catterall said in an email that calculating the trajectories of falling objects hadn't been seen as a particularly grand puzzle of physics. "The background given in the article seems genuine enough, so it may indeed be true, but I haven't heard anything about a new solution to a Newtonian problem on the grapevine," he told me.

Based on what's come out about the work so far, the consensus seems to be that Ray has done amazing work for his age ? and if he had to choose between his passion for science and his passion for soccer, he'd be well-advised to pick math and physics.?His paper putting forth an "analytical solution to two fundamental unsolved problems" may not be the breakthrough that some of the reports have made it out to be, but that doesn't take anything away from the teenager's achievement.

"What Ray has worked out, almost certainly independently, would definitely put him in the 99th percentile amongst his peers and maybe even more," one Redditor observed.

Such flows were extensively studied from the last part of the 19th century, so it's true that they lie beyond Newton's knowledge. A good approximation will be to take the drag force as pi r^2 rho v^2, where r is the radius of the ball, v its speed and rho the density of air. I'm unaware of a puzzle regarding bouncing balls. In detail the bounce will depend on the physical properties of the ball ??as any squash player knows. Usually one adopts a coefficient of restitution.?To be impressed we need to know details."

University of Bristol physicist Michael Berry: "Without seeing the details of what Ray has claimed, it's impossible to comment intelligently. It depends crucially on how he has modeled the air resistance. But a falling body with air resistance (however modeled) is hardly a 'fundamental unsolved problem,' as he seems to think. OTTAWA ? Health Canada isn't ready to crack down on pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks, despite a long-standing request from government inspectors for direction on what "action can be taken against these products," internal records show.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency pressed Health Canada for a decision last year, after fielding a complaint from the Association of Canadian Distillers last May about alcoholic beverages that market themselves as providing an energy boost. The association said in addition to being deceptive and misleading, that given Health Canada's classification of alcohol as a depressant, "these marketing practices also have serious potential negative health consequences."

Minutes of a July 2011 meeting of food inspectors at which the complaint was discussed, released to Postmedia News under access to information, said "CFIA needs clarification on stronger regulatory basis on which action can be taken against these products," saying there are labelling and composition "concerns because the product is being represented as an energy drink."

Health Canada says a new guidance document for industry and government inspectors is still a work in progress, but confirmed Friday it will provide clarity on both the use of caffeine-containing ingredients in these products and address the use of the term "energy" to market them.

"This is an implied health claim because it is generally recognized to refer to a stimulatory or 'energy boosting' effect. The guidance is important in order to ensure that labels for these products are not misleading for consumers," Health Canada said in a statement.

The department, which establishes rules to be enforced by CFIA, has been wrestling with the issue as far back as 2009, when the agency asked Health Canada to spell out in a "transparent" way its position on pre-mixed beverages marketed as alcoholic energy drinks, given the department's public messaging not to mix regular energy drinks and alcohol.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and caffeine is a stimulant that can make people think they are less intoxicated than they are. Health Canada warns this can lead to prolonged drinking sessions and higher alcohol consumption, increasing health and safety risks.

In 2010, Health Canada issued a letter to liquor control boards across the country, clarifying that pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks were permitted under current regulations ? so long as the stimulant is derived from an ingredient that naturally contains caffeine.

Regular energy drinks contain synthetic caffeine in addition to caffeine derived from guarana, with total levels of caffeine ranging from 80 mg to 200 mg in each can. The caffeine in alcoholic beverages such as Rockstar + Vodka, MOJO, Octane 7.0 and Poppers Rush 7%, is derived from guarana, and the products are represented as providing an energy boost or being a source of energy.

In an interview, C.J. Helie, executive vice-president of the Association of Canadian Distillers, said his organization believes this contravenes a key section of Canada's labelling rules because any representation that an alcoholic drink is a stimulant, boosts energy, or has stimulative properties is incompatible with alcohol's core characteristic as a depressant.

Helie said the health issue is as pressing as the commercial aspect of the dispute.

"How do you convince consumers that it's a risky behaviour if they think it's being sold legally in every corner store in Quebec? That's the crux of the issue."

For example, Blue Spike Beverages, based in Montreal, says its MOJO "alternative alcoholic beverage," available in Quebec convenience stores and some liquor board stores outside Quebec, was developed because young people started "mixing spirits and energy drinks. This is how the new market segment of alcoholic energy drinks was born."

Meanwhile, Blue Spike's calls its "Octane 7.0 alcohol + energy drink" a "revolutionary product which combines 7% alcohol with 80 mg of caffeine and is designed for consumers who want an alcoholic drink with all the kick an energy drinks packs!"

Helie said Health Canada has to find a way to respond more quickly, even when facing a complex regulatory issue.

"I think some companies recognize that the brand cycle is now faster than the regulatory response cycle. They take a bet they can bring something in which either skirts the edges or even goes way over the edges and they can get in, make some money and get out before the regulator has an opportunity to respond," said Helie, adding he's "obviously frustrated" it's taking so long to resolve.

Minister Alain St.Ange also took the opportunity to update Minister Tokozile Xasa and her delegation that Air Seychelles had now confirmed to increase its weekly service to Johannesburg to 4 flights as from January 2013.

Minister Van Schalkwyk is one of the ministers from Africa who has been invited to address Routes AFrica alongside the Seychelles Minister responsible for Internal Affairs&Transport, the Zimbabwe Minister for Tourism, the President of La Reunion, and the CEO of Ethiopian Airlines among other industry leaders and professionals.

The South Africa TV and written press are also expected to be traveling to Seychelles to cover Routes Africa 2012 and the presentation by their Minister Marthinus Van Schalkwyk.

?The visit by the South African Minister to Seychelles will be an opportunity to consolidate the friendly ties that exist between Seychelles and South Africa. Since the recession, I have found that perspective clients came to us (general contractors) under the impression that custom homes and all there luxuries had gotten cheaper. It?s not true; actually the price for custom homes has risen since the recession started. There are a couple of things that have attributed to this;

?? ? ??Taxes. Taxes have changed in the province of Ontario, with the HST coming in we now are charging tax on all parts of the house. This has driven the cost of custom homes up by thousands of dollars by itself.
?? ? ? ? Material. The raw material for custom homes has gone up since the recession. When the crash of 2008 happened a lot of the businesses that supplied material to the construction industry either downsized or went out of business. This drove the price of raw goods up instead of down. With less competition and less product on the market then the price of products always goes up.
????????? Construction Industry itself. The industry is under a recession only in some parts of the province. In a lot of places the industry has maintained itself or has even grown. Even though there are more contractors looking to build houses, there seems to be more houses to build.
????????? Baby boomer generation. With the large baby boomer generation reaching retirement age, it has created its own bubble of growth that is fueling the construction economy. This boomer generation is the largest and wealthiest group of people to ever reach retirement age and is generating endless jobs in the construction industry in certain parts of the province.
????????? Clients asking for more service. The boomer generation wants service and not just someone to build them a house. Companies are increasing their office staff to keep up with client demand for personnel service. As you increase staff so goes your overhead, as your overhead increases so do the cost of doing business. Contractors now are hiring interior designers to help their clients work through the endless options that you can find in stores and on the internet. You used to just hand a client a bill, now they are asking for a breakdown of bills to understand where the money goes and were they are with payment of the hold backs. More time now has to be spent with face time with clients and answering their emails and phone calls.
????????? Building code changes. The building code in Ontario has gone through a radical change this year. Energy efficiency which was an option for people that wanted to pay the higher price is now part of the building code. This has drove the price of custom homes up, with home owners being told they have to have more insulation installed throughout the home, higher efficiency furnaces installed and HRV?s as a standard piece of equipment. It is a good thing that the province is working toward more efficient home, but it raises the cost of your home when you build it.
????????? Wsib premiums and insurance costs have risen. Insurance for general contractors, the building of the home and WSIB premiums have all been rising every year. This means that the cost of doing business is ever increasing.
????????? Modern convinces. With the explosion of technology to run your home with computer software growing every year it has forced contractors to install a lot of extra wiring for electrical and structured wiring for audio, video, automation and internet. With in-ceiling speakers, audio controls on the walls and home theatres the costs keep going up. Multi headed showers, steam showers, heated floors, residential elevators, dog showers, automatic lighting, LED lighting and many more convinces that never existed before are driving the price per square foot through the roof.
????????? Internet and TV exposure. With the use of the internet and home shows on television showing you the latest and greatest things in homes, people are exposed to things that they never would have thought that they needed before. So the more things that you want in your home the more it will cost to build it. It used to be that your selection was limited to what your architect or builder had used before, now the possibilities are endless.
????????? Being Green. With everyone thinking about the environment especially when they are constructing their new home, home owners are now actively looking for better options then the traditional ones. This is a wonderful trend that is well over due in home building. The only problem is that being green tends to cost the green. Products that are usually green tend to be a higher end product and last a lot longer, with this comes an increased price tag. It also usually means that there are less suppliers of the product which also allows them to keep the price tag higher.
????????? What used to be luxury is now the norm. Granite counter tops were always a luxury that you found in high end kitchens. Now all kitchens in new homes are granite and almost all bathrooms have granite tops for their vanities. Vinyl floors used to be the norm for a lot of bathrooms and laundry rooms. Now it is tile with heated floors underneath.

Like everything in life if you want the finer things in life they come with a price. You would be surprised, maybe even shocked on how little general contractors actually make on building a custom home. If you do your research before asking a contractor for a budget you will be able to avoid sticker shock. Just remember that the more things you want in your house the more it will cost in the end.

When you are planning the budget for your custom home try this simple little routine. Make a list of all the things you want in the house, no matter what it is and how much you think it will cost put it on the list. Then break down the list so that you have several columns for example;


Hardwood floors	Large Kitchen	Geo-thermal heating	Back up gas generator

If you make a list like this then you should be able to help design your budget and get the most value out of your custom built home. This will also allow your general contractor to give you a price on your custom home that is broken down.

This will allow your general contractor to put the first two columns together for your budget and give you the last two columns as options. This way you can stay focused on what you want in the house with the budget you can afford.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Jason Dufner matched playing partner Zach Johnson's birdie putt on the 17th hole Saturday, then overcame a wayward final tee shot to save par and keep the lead at the Colonial.

Slowed by two late bogeys, Dufner shot a 4-under 66 in the third round for a 15-under 195 total.

That put him a stroke ahead of Johnson, who shot 65 to set up what could basically be a match-play final group Sunday for the winner's plaid jacket. Tom Gillis was a distant third at 7 under after a 69.

Dufner, the winner last week in the Byron Nelson Championship about 30 miles away, is trying to win for the third time in five weeks. He also is trying to do something only Ben Hogan has done.

Hogan, Dufner's hero, is the only player to win both PGA Tour events in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in the same year. When he did it in 1946, they weren't played in consecutive weeks.

The last player to win in consecutive weeks on the PGA Tour was Tiger Woods in 2009. Nobody won more than two tournaments last season.

After bogeys at Nos. 14 and 16, Dufner's approach at the 379-yard 17th rolled about 8 feet from the flag.

Johnson, within a stroke of the lead after a 17-foot birdie at the par-3 16th, followed Dufner at No. 17 with a shot to the same spot ? his ball up and stopped against the one already on the green. After a rules official sorted out the marks, Johnson curled in a birdie putt. Dufner then did the same to keep his lead.

When his final tee shot of the day went way left, closer to the 10th fairway than the 18th, Dufner got his next shot on the green and two-putted from 68 feet to save par.

Dufner has led or shared the lead after 12 of his last 35 rounds, including five of the last seven.

Before winning at New Orleans on April 29, the 35-year-old Dufner was winless in his previous 163 PGA Tour starts. He then took a week off to get married, returned to play at The Players Championship before winning the Nelson.

Bo Van Pelt had his streak of 13 consecutive sub-par rounds at Hogan's Alley end with a 71. But he was fourth at 204.

Johnson wore a plaid-collared shirt for the third round. The last of his seven PGA Tour victories came two years ago when he slipped on a plaid jacket at Colonial.

When Dufner and Johnson completed their first nine holes Saturday, they were tied at 13 under and had a five-stroke lead on the rest of the field. Dufner then had three straight birdies.

Dufner made a 20-foot birdie putt at the 386-yard 10th hole, where Johnson had his first two-putt of the round ? from nearly 51 feet ? to save par.

At the straight 630-yard 11th, Dufner hit an approach from 108 yards inside 5 feet for a birdie. Johnson two-putted from 7 feet for par.

Johnson drove into a fairway bunker at No. 12 but saved par with pitch shot inside 2 feet. Dufner got a break when his tee shot rolled through a bunker there and his approach to 4 feet for birdie to get to 16 under.

Dufner had a streak of 38 consecutive bogey-free holes snapped at the 449-yard 14th when he drove into the rough then missed the green with the second shot. But Johnson had his first three-putt of the tournament at the same hole, from 60 feet after his approach from a fairway bunker.

At No. 15, Johnson's second shot settled into a grassy clump only inches from rolling over a ledge into a ditch. With his feet together to keep from falling over himself, Johnson's pitch from about 81 feet rolled only inches from the cup to set up a tap-in par-saver.

That was the kind of scrambling the 2007 Masters champion had to do several times.

Johnson needed only eight putts for a 31 on the front nine, though some of those putts were just to save par since he hit just three of those greens in regulation.

While he used his putter after his approach at No. 2 went through the green into the rough, and made the 28-footer for his second consecutive birdie, that didn't even count as a putt.

His approach at No. 3 was short of the green, and he chipped to 3 feet for par.
