REAL ESTATE: Christmas lights on Chatham Place : Real Estate

Posted on | November 24, 2012 | Comments

I?ll never forget my first Christmas in California.

As the family boarded the plane to leave behind the white Christmases we?ve known in the Midwest, I couldn?t help but think it would be a bit bleak without that nip in the air, a blanket of snow, the bustle along Michigan Avenue and the jingle of carriage bells.

Christmas Star card hauled out for the holidays

I was taken by storm, and total surprise.

From the palm tree lined drives along Highway 111 in Palm Springs to the Mission Inn in Riverside, I was captivated by the spirit and beauty of it all: We watched a rainbow form over the San Bernardino Mountains after a rain storm, heard carolers decked in Old English clothes sing, ?Noel,? and watched rabbits elude coyotes in a maze of Joshua Trees that were dusted with snow.

Now in Riverside, I can?t wait to take in The Mission Inn and see the lights go up on Chapman Place, a one-block enclave of homes that go all out for Christmas ? and have since the 1950s.

It?s a neighborhood I picked to kick off a string of stories aimed at getting to the heart of a neighborhood ? mostly, because I know that when it comes to real estate, there?s far more at stake than price.

Schools. Closeness to work. The view. Strong suits. Oddities. Quirks. The sense of community and place.

If you were the Realtor what would you tell the potential buyers? What do you look for, like or want to change?

A quote that fits the place: ?Love the moment, and the energy will spread beyond all boundaries.?

The first installation of ?On the Street Where You Live,? entitled, ?Christmas Comes to Chapman,? will appear in Sunday?s print business section of The Press-Enterprise. It?s online, now.

If you?ve got an idea for a story about your house, or your neighborhood that makes it special, helps leverage a deal or is a stand-out, please contact me at dgruszecki@pe.com

'Xbox TV' with casual gaming, streaming due in 2013? | SciTech ...

Microsoft may be prepping to introduce a new "Xbox TV" with casual gaming and streaming abilities in 2013, a tech site reported.

?

The Verge cited multiple sources who said the Xbox set-top box may be a low-cost alternative to its popular Xbox gaming console.

?

"The move will allow Microsoft to further increase its presence in the living room, providing consumers with a choice between a set-top box or a full next-generation Xbox console," it said.

?

It quoted Microsoft as saying in a statement that Xbox 360 "has found new ways to extend the console lifecycle by introducing controller-free experiences with Kinect and re-inventing the console with a new dashboard and new entertainment content partnerships."

?

"We are always thinking about what is next for our platform and how to continue to defy the lifecycle convention," it quoted Microsoft as saying.

?

The Verge said the set-top box may be part of a two-SKU strategy for Microsoft's next-generation of Xbox hardware that will be unveiled in 2013.

?

Citing its sources, it said the new device will run on the core components of Windows 8 and support casual gaming titles rather than full Xbox games.

?

Also, it said Microsoft has plans for it to be an "always on" device that boots and resumes quickly, to provide near-instant access to TV and entertainment services.

?

Combining with phone?

?

The Verge also said Microsoft may combine its core system for the next Xbox with a phone stack "to deliver a phone capable of running a full version of Microsoft's Xbox Live services."

?

"It has also investigated providing this functionality to TV OEMs, who could include the core services as part of a licensed Xbox television set," it added. ? TJD, GMA News

Iron Dome shootdowns of Gaza rockets cost $25 million-$30 million: Israel

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's Iron Dome interceptions of Palestinian rockets during eight days of Gaza fighting cost $25 million to $30 million, the government said on Thursday, arguing the U.S.-backed system was well worth the money.

"Were Iron Dome traded on the (Tel Aviv) stock exchange or Nasdaq, it would have multiplied its share value several times over," Civil Defense Minister Avi Dichter told Israel Radio in an interview where he outlined the system's outlay.

Using radar-guided interceptor missiles, Israel's five truck-towed Iron Dome batteries shot down 421 of some 1,500 rockets launched from the Gaza Strip between November 14 and Wednesday's Egyptian-brokered truce, the military said.

It put Iron Dome's success rate at 90 percent. To lower costs, the system engages only rockets that threaten populated areas, though it often fires two interceptor missiles at once.

Rockets killed 5 people in Israel and wounded dozens during the conflict, police said. Three died in coastal Ashdod on a day when Rafael Advanced Defense Systems Ltd, Iron Dome's state-owned manufacturer, said the system had suffered a malfunction.

If more Hamas rockets had got through, especially the handful fired at the commercial hub Tel Aviv, and caused mass casualties, devastating Israeli retaliation perhaps including a full-scale ground assault would have been nearly certain.

A senior official estimated that such escalation could cost Israel as much as $380 million a day. Keen to stem that risk, the United States has been helping bankroll Iron Dome. President Barack Obama pledged further support on Wednesday.

Israel says it needs 13 batteries for satisfactory nationwide Defense. A Defense industry source put the unit cost for Israel at around $50 million.

The focus of Israel's aerial assault on Gaza were the stockpiles and launch silos of rockets imported or improvised by Hamas and other factions. Gaza medical officials said 162 Palestinians were killed, more than half of them civilians.

The most potent of those rockets were Iranian-designed Fajr-5s with 75 km (46 mile) ranges and 175 kg (385 lb) warheads, though Hamas also said it used a Gaza-made variant, "Qassam M-75".

Iran denies supplying arms to the Palestinians. But the Iranian Young Journalists Club website on Wednesday quoted the commander of the Islamic republic's Revolutionary Guards, Mohammad Ali Jafari, saying the corps had "put the technology of Fajr-5 missiles at their (Gazans') disposal and right now a good number of these have been made and are available to them".

Summarizing the Gaza assault in a separate Israel Radio interview, Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: "Hamas's heavy rockets were destroyed (and) a large part of the mid-range rockets were destroyed."

Special Education Provider Audited for Excessive Billing

Directors argue their for-profit nature makes them a target for harsh auditing.

Directors argue their for-profit nature makes them a target for harsh auditing.

by Scott Waldman -

A special education provider inappropriately billed taxpayers more than $180,000 and used public money to pay for a home entertainment center, a Disney World vacation and a dishwasher, according to a new state comptroller?s audit.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said the directors of Achievements PLLC used the money to enrich themselves, their family members and staff. The audit found that Executive Director Tami Callister and her husband, Jim Callister, the group?s business director, spent $68,072 on goods and services for their family. That includes a $12,616 home entertainment center, a cruise, tickets to Dave Matthews Band and Phish concerts, fencing and annual membership fees to a family recreation center.

?Money that should be spent solely on students is instead being wasted, misspent or even pocketed by certain special education contractors to enrich themselves,? DiNapoli said. ?It?s clear the system for monitoring these dollars is broken and taxpayers are paying the price.?

The audit also found that, between 2005 and 2010, the Callisters racked up $66,225 in excessive charges to lease office space in a building that they owned. The audit discovered another $48,293 in other inappropriate costs. The directors also tried to conceal personal charges by distributing them to various accounts used to set the business?s reimbursement rates, according to DiNapoli.

The directors responded in an extensive rebuttal, essentially claiming that costs were appropriate or the result of accounting errors. They also claimed that they were unfairly targeted by DiNapoli?s office because theirs is a for-profit company and that not-for-profits would be treated more justly.

?It is disingenuous of the auditors to create wrongful impressions of Achievements, its professional members or the spouses of these company members through careless phraseology and factually inaccurate statements,? Achievements? directors said in their response. ?We would encourage the auditors to correct these false statements and to provide a more balanced presentation of Achievements? operations.?

DiNapoli?s office is auditing the state Education Department?s oversight and management of New York?s special education program, which spends $2 billion each year to provide special services and classroom instruction to 37,000 children with physical, developmental and emotional disabilities.
