N.Y. home explodes, killing girl, injuring 4 others

By NBC News

A home explosion in Wilson, N.Y., has killed a 12-year-old girl and injured four other members of the household, according to reports.

Seven people live in the two-story house, which?was leveled by a blast Tuesday morning, The Buffalo News reported.

When firefighters arrived, several fires were still burning in the wreckage. They found a 12-year-old girl dead in the rubble; two other children were not home at the time because they had stayed with friends overnight, the paper said.

?I?ve been in the fire company 47 years, and this is the worst I?ve ever seen,? Richard Townsend of the South Wilson Fire Company told The Buffalo News.

Neighbors reported hearing an explosion at about 6 a.m. They rushed outside to help and found several people outside, apparently blown out of the house from the force, reported the newspaper.

Four others were found in a ditch, injured. Two of the injured were taken by helicopter to Erie County Medical Center, The Buffalo News reported; the other two were taken by ambulance to nearby hospitals.

Crews don't know what caused the blast. Firefighters were attempting to shut off propane tanks that supplied fuel to the area.

Wilson, a village in Niagara County, is located along Lake Ontario, about 40 miles outside of Buffalo.
